It's not as much work as you think, to do the updates. I watch all the clubs, so unless they hide their status the watch bar tells me exactly when they last logged in. And I get all their journals, too. I must admit I have not been listing all the contests, only the contests that the clubs themselves send me. I've thought about it, but haven't had the time yet.
Initially it took a few days to find all the clubs, by going to clubs I knew and rooting through their affiliates and through their affiliates and so on until I couldn't find any more. That WAS a lot of work!
